Rebohoth Area Guide
Welcome to the town nicknamed the ‘nation’s summer capital,’ Rehoboth Beach! Part of the Seaford, Delaware Micropolitan Statistical area, Rehoboth Beach is a popular vacation destination and gets its nickname from all the people from Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania who love to come visit the beaches here. Famous for its beaches, wooden boardwalk, eclectic shops and amusements, Rehoboth Beach welcomes an influx of visitors in the summer, the population often swelling to over 25,000 people.
Different from the more developed Ocean City, Maryland, Rehoboth Beach, together with the towns of Lewes, Dewey Beach and others make a great alternative to the bigger, busier beaches. Maintaining its small town charm and personal touch, Rehoboth Beach is a great place to visit or take up permanent residence, with its full history and great scenery, a great place to retire for a bit from the hustle and bustle of the workaday world.
History
In 1873, Rehoboth Beach started out as the Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association, founded by Reverend Robert W. Todd. It followed in the footstep of similar resorts on the New Jersey shore, but was disbanded in 1881. By 1891, the location had been incorporated by the Delaware General Assembly as Henlopen City, and shortly afterward it was renamed Rehoboth Beach.
